"Unfinished Project" was a performance at Women and their Work Gallery in Austin, TX. The shack at the center of the gallery was labeled: “Building takes the work of many feminists. Feel free to add to this structure in whatever way you see fit.” I began the construction and invited audience members to join me. Hammers, nails, and building materials were provided, although many participants added personal items, including photos, bandanas, and, yes, tampons. This installation/performance called upon visitors to the gallery to actively construct something, provoking them to imagine the nature of feminist space and the communal act of creation. It also required a personal decision of whether or not to claim the identity of a “feminist” just by participating. The basic look of the structure was adopted from the rustic, handmade buildings on the grounds of wimmin’s lands that I visited.
