"Unfinished Project" was a performance at Women and their Work Gallery in Austin, TX. The shack at the center of the gallery was labeled: “Building takes the work of many feminists. Feel free to add to this structure in whatever way you see fit.” I began the construction and invited audience members to join me. Hammers, nails, and building materials were provided, although many participants added personal items, including photos, bandanas, and, tampons. This installation/performance called upon visitors to the gallery to actively construct something, provoking them to imagine the nature of feminist space and the communal act of creation. It also required a personal decision of whether or not to claim the identity of a “feminist” just by participating. The basic look of the structure was adopted from the rustic, handmade buildings on the grounds of wimmin’s lands that I visited.
