I photographed these women at a ballroom dancing competition in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 2009. My grandmother became a competitive ballroom dancer twenty years ago, when she was in her seventies, long after most people give up on finding new passions. I was interested in photographing her world, which I found filled with unconventional grace and beauty -- not to mention the anxiety of competition. These photographs were exhibited in a solo show at The Front Gallery (New Orleans), and they will appear next year in a group exhibition at Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts.
